Founded during the California 49er Gold Rush, Rough and Ready is a distinctive rural community just west of Grass Valley. The town was established in 1849 by Wisconsin miners and named in honor of General Zachary “Old Rough and Ready” Taylor.

In 1850, residents briefly declared the town "The Independent Great Republic of Rough and Ready" before voting to rejoin the United States (approximately two weeks later!!). Today, the community retains its independent spirit and Gold Rush character, represented by its historic landmark, old-town displays and familiar roadside miner statue. At approximately 1,885 feet in elevation, Rough and Ready offers country living in the Sierra Foothills—locally described as “above the fog and below the snow" and PLENTY of local recreation!
